Shiva Tandava Stotram
Jatatavee gala jjala pravaha pavitha sthale,
Gale avalabhya lambithaam bhujanga thunga malikaam,
Dama ddama dama ddama ninnadava damarvayam,
Chakara chanda thandavam thanothu nah shivah shivam. 1
With his neck, consecrated by the flow of water flowing from the thick forest-like locks of hair,
And on the neck, where the lofty snake is hanging garland,
And the Damaru drum making the sound of Damat Damat Damat Damat,
Lord Shiva did the auspicious dance of Tandava and may He shower prosperity on us all.
Jata kataha sambhramabrama nillimpa nirjari,
Vilola veechi vallari viraja mana moordhani,
Dhaga dhaga daga jjwala lalata patta pavake,
Kishora Chandra shekare rathi prathi kshanam mama. 2
I have a very deep interest in Lord Shiva,
Whose head is glorified by the rows of moving waves of the celestial river Ganga,
Agitating in the deep well of his hair-locks,
And who has the brilliant fire flaming on the surface of his forehead,
And who has the crescent moon as a jewel on his head.
Dara darendra nandini vilasa bhandhu bhandura,
Sphuradigantha santhathi pramodha mana manase,
Krupa kadaksha dhorani niruddha durdharapadi,
Kwachi digambare mano vinodhamethu vasthuni. 3
May my mind seek happiness in the Lord Shiva,
In whose mind all the living beings of the glorious universe exist,
Who is the sportive companion of Parvati (daughter of the mountain king),
Who controls invincible hardships with the flow of his compassionate look,
Who is all-pervasive (the Skies are his clothes).
Jada bhujanga pingala sphurath phana mani prabha,
Kadamba kumkuma drava praliptha digvadhu mukhe,
Madhandha sindhura sphurathwagu utthariya medhure,
Mano vinodhamadhbutham bibarthu bhootha bharthari. 4
May I seek wonderful pleasure in Lord Shiva, who is supporter of all life,
Who with his creeping snake with reddish brown hood and with the luster of his gem on it
Spreading out variegated colors on the beautiful faces of the maidens of directions,
Who is covered with a glittering upper garment made of the skin of a huge intoxicated elephant.
Sahasra lochana prabhoothyasesha lekha shekhara,
Prasoona dhooli dhorani vidhu sarangri peedabhu,
Bhujangaraja Malaya nibhadha jada jhootaka,
Sriyai chiraya jayatham chakora bandhu shekhara. 5
May Lord Shiva give us prosperity,
Who has the moon (relative of the Chakora bird) as his head-jewel,
Whose hair is tied by the red snake-garland,
Whose foot-stool is grayed by the flow of dust from the
Flowers from the rows of heads of all the Gods, Indra, Vishnu and others.
Lalata chathvara jwaladhanam jaya sphulingabha,
Nipeetha pancha sayagam saman nilimpanayakam,
Sudha mayookha lekhaya virajamana shekharam,
Maha kapali sampade, siro jadalamasthu nah. 6
May we get the wealth of Siddhis from Shiva's locks of hair,
Which devoured the God of Love with the sparks of the fire flaming in His forehead,
Who is bowed by all the celestial leaders,
Who is beautiful with a crescent moon
Karala bhala pattika dhagaddhagadhagajjwala,
Ddhanam jayahuthi krutha prachanda pancha sayage ,
Dharadharendra nandhini kuchagra chithrapathraka,
Prakalpanaika shilpini, trilochane rather mama. 7
My interest is in Lord Shiva, who has three eyes,
Who has offered the powerful God of Love into the fire,
Flaming Dhagad Dhagad on the flat surface of his forehead
Who is the sole expert artist of drawing decorative lines
on the tips of breasts of Parvati, the daughter of the mountain king.
Naveena megha mandali nirudha durdharath sphurath,
Kahoo niseedhi neethamah prabhandha bandha kandharah,
Nilimpa nirjari darsthanothu kruthi sindhurah,
Kala nidhana bandhurah sriyam jagat durandharah. 8
May Lord Shiva give us prosperity,
Who bears the burden of this universe,
Who is lovely with the moon, who is wearing the skin,
Who has the celestial river Ganga,
Whose neck is dark as midnight of new moon night covered by many layers of clouds.
Prafulla neela pankaja prapancha kalima prabha,
Valambhi kanda kanthali ruchi prabandha kandharam,
Smarschidham puraschidham bhavaschidham makhachidham,
Gajachidandakachidham tham anthakachidham bhaje. 9
I pray to Lord Shiva, whose neck is tied with the luster of the temples
Hanging on the neck with the glory of the fully-bloomed blue lotuses
Which looked like the blackness (sins) of the universe,
Who is the killer of Manmatha, who destroyed Tripuras,
Who destroyed the bonds of worldly life, who destroyed the sacrifice,
Who destroyed the demon Andhaka, the killer of the elephants,
And who controlled the God of death, Yama.
Agarva sarva mangalaa kalaa kadamba manjari,
Rasa pravaha madhuri vijrumbha mana madhu vrtham,
Suranthakam, paranthakam, bhavanthakam, makhandakam,
Gajandhakandhakandakam thamanthakanthakam bhaje. 10
I pray to Lord Shiva, who has bees flying all over because of the sweet
Honey from the beautiful bunch of auspicious Kadamba flowers,
Who is the killer of Manmatha, who destroyed Tripuras,
Who destroyed the bonds of worldly life, who destroyed the sacrifice,
Who destroyed the demon Andhaka, the killer of the elephants,
And who controlled the God of death, Yama.
Jayathwadhabra vibramadbujaamga maswasath,
Vinirgamath, kramasphurath, karala bhala havya vat,
Dhimiddhimiddhimidh vanan mridanga thunga mangala,
Dhwani karma pravarthitha prachanda thandavah shivah. 11
Lord Shiva, whose dance of Tandava is in tune with the series of loud
Sounds of drum making Dhimid Dhimid Dhimid sounds,
Who has the fire on the great forehead,
The fire that is spreading out because of the
Breath of the snake wandering in whirling motion in the glorious sky.
Drusha dwichi thra thalpayor bhujanga moukthika srajo,
Garishta rathna loshtayo suhrudhwi paksha pakshayo,
Trunara vinda chakshusho praja mahee mahendrayo,
Samapravarthika kadha sadashivam bhajamyaham. 12
When will I worship Lord Sadashiva (eternally auspicious)?
God, with equal vision towards the people and an emperor, and a blade of grass
And lotus-like eye, towards both friends and enemies,
towards the valuable gem and some lump of dirt,
Towards a snake and a garland and towards varied ways of the world.
Kada nilampa nirjaree nikunja kotare vasan,
Vimuktha durmathee sada sirasthanjaleem vahan,
Vilola lola lochano lalama bhala lagnaka,
Shivethi manthamucharan kada sukhee bhavamyaham. 13
When will I be happy, living in the hollow place near the celestial
River, Ganga, carrying the folded hands on my head all the time,
With my bad thinking washed away, and uttering the mantra of Lord Shiva
And devoted in the God with glorious forehead with vibrating eyes?
Imam hi nithya meva muktha muthamothamam sthavam,
Pathan, smaran broovan naro vishudhimethi santhatham,
Hare Gurou subhakthimasu yathi nanyadha gatheem,
Vimohinam hi dehinaam sushakarasya chithanam. 14
Whoever reads, remembers and says this best stotra as it is said here,
gets purified for ever, and obtains devotion in the great Guru Shiva.
For this devotion, there is no other way. Just the mere thought of
Lord Shiva indeed removes the delusion.
Poojavasana samaye dasa vakhra geetham,
Ya shambhu poojana param padthi pradhoshe,
Thasya sthiraam radha gajendra thuranga yuktham,
Lakshmeem sadaiva sumukheem pradadathi shambu. 15
In the evening, after sunset, at the end of Puja, whoever utters this
stotra dedicated to the worship of Shiva,
Lord Shiva blessed him with very stable Lakshmi (prosperity)
With all the richness of chariots, elephants and horses.
Iti Sriravana krutam Shiva Tandava Stotram sampurnam
Thus ends the Shiva Tandava Stotram written by Ravana.

By Adi Shankara
Translated by P.R. Ramachander
Adi Shankara wrote many beautiful Stotram (hymns) that describe in a sublime way the various forms of the divine, but the Dakshinamurthy Stotram is not only the description of a deity but also the summary of the non-dualistic philosophy (Advaita).
Dakshinamurthy is an incarnation of Shiva. This aspect of Shiva is his personification as the supreme awareness, understanding and knowledge.
Dhyanam
Mouna Vyakhya prakatitha, para,
Brahma thathwam yuvanam,
Varshishtha anthevasad rishiganai,
Ravrutham brahma nishtai,
Acharyendram kara kalihtha chin,
Mudram ananda roopam,
Swathmaramam mudhitha vadanam,
Dakshinamurthimeede.
I praise and salute that Dakshinamurthy,
Who faces the south,
Who explains the true nature of the supreme Brahman,
Through his state of silence,
Who is young in looks,
Who is surrounded by disciples who are old Sages,
Whose minds are fixed on Brahman,
Who is the greatest of teachers,
Who shows the Chin Mudra (Thumb and forefinger join as a zero) by his hand,
Who is personification of happiness,
Who is in the state of extreme joy within himself,
And who has a smiling face.
Stotram
Viswam darpana drusyamana nagari,
Thulyam nijantargatham,
Pasyannathmani mayaya bahirivoth,
Bhutham yatha nidraya,
Ya sakshath kuruthe prabodha samaye,
Swathmanameva dwayam,
Thasmai sri guru murthaye nama idham,
Sree Dakshinamurthaye. || 1 ||
Similar to the image of a town as seen in the mirror,
When one sees the image of the world within him,
The world appears as if it is outside.
It is similar to his seeing due to illusion,
During the state of sleep,
That the one real fact appears as many different truths,
And he realizes, when he wakes up and sees the reality,
That he is really the one and only one soul.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.
Beejasyanthari vankuro jagadhidham,
Prang nirvikalpam puna,
Mayakalpitha desa kala kalanaa,
Vaichithrya chithrikrutham,
Mayaveeva vijrumbhayathyapi maha,
Yogeeva yah swechaya,
Thasmai sri guru murthaye nama idham,
Sree dakshinamurthaye. || 2 ||
Like the germ inside the seed is its part,
But becomes different after development
The many places and time which are before us,
Are drawn by illusion in the board of life in a peculiar manner,
By a great savant or an expert Siddha,
Who can create them as per their will,
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.
Yasyaiva sphuranam sadathmakamasath,
Kalparthagam bhasathe,
Sakshaath thathwamaseethi veda vachasa,
Yobodhyathyasrithhan,
Yath saksht karanath bhavenna punara,
Aavrithir bhavambhonidhow,
Thasmai sri guru murthaye nama idham,
Sree dakshinamurthaye. || 3 ||
He who exists as the real light of truth,
And shines in the false world of appearance,
And He who teaches disciples the great saying,
“Thou art that” after realizing its import,
Gets away from this cycle of life and death.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.
Nanachidhra ghato dhara sthitha maha,
Deepa prabha bhaswaram,
Jnanam yasya thu chakshuradhi karana,
Dwara bahi spandathe,
Jaanameethi tham eva baandham anubathi,
Yethath samastham jagat,
Thasmai sri guru murthaye nama idham,
Sree dakshinamurthaye. || 4 ||
Like the light emanating from a lamp,
Kept in a pot with many holes,
Goes out in all directions,
In the person in whom the wisdom goes out
Through the openings of ear, eye, mouth and thought,
And when that person realizes that “I know myself”,
This whole universe shines after Him alone,
Who shines in the consciousness as the knower.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.
Deham pranam api indryanyapi chalaam,
Budhim cha soonyam vidhu,
Stree balandha jadopamasthvaha mithi,
Brandha brusam vadhina,
Maya sakthi vilasa kalpitha maha,
Vyamoha samharine,
Thasmai sri guru murthaye nama idham,
Sree dakshinamurthaye. || 5 ||
Those great philosophers , who think that,
The body, the soul and the fickle intellect,
The concept of emptiness and all other nothingness,
Are nothing but themselves,
Are similar to the women children, blind and the ignorant.
It is only He who can destroy, this veil of ignorance,
And wake us up from this state of deceit.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.
Rahu grastha divakarendu sadrusho,
Maya samachadanath,
Sanamthra karanopa samharanatho,
Yo abhoot sushuptha pumaan,
Pragaswapsaamithi prabodha samaye,
Yaa prathyabignayathe,
Thasmai sri guru murthaye nama idham,
Sree dakshinamurthaye. || 6 ||
Similar to the Sun when being masked by the serpent Rahu,
Knows that it was existing, once the eclipse is over
That man whose senses are suppressed
When he is asleep,
Because of the veil of illusion,
Realizes that he was in the state of sleep,
When he wakes up.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.
Balyadishwapi jagaradhadishu thadha,
Sarva sva avasthasthaswapi,
Vyavrutha swanuvarthamanamaha,
Mithyanth sphurantham sada,
Svathmaanam pragatikarothi bajatham,
Yo mudraya bhadraya,
Thasmai sri guru murthaye nama idham,
Sree dakshinamurthaye. || 7 ||
Salutations to Him who shines and exhibits Himself
By the beatific Chin Mudra of the hand (Thumb and forefinger join as a zero),
That He exists within the humans as Self,
Forever and non-changing,
Even during the changing states of childhood, youth and old age
And even during the states of sleep, dream and wakefulness.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.
Viswam pasyathi karya karana thaya,
Swa swami sambandatha,
Sishyacharya thaya thadaiva pithru,
Puthradhyathmana bedatha,
Swapne Jagrathi va ya esha purusho,
Maya Paribramitha,
Thasmai sri guru murthaye nama idham,
Sree dakshinamurthaye. || 8 ||
The world sees as cause and effect,
The differences between us and our Lord,
The distinction between teacher and the taught,
The distinction between father and son,
And so the man is confused by illusion,
And believes in these differences,
During the times of dream and wakefulness.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.
Bhoorambaamsya anilo ambhara,
Maharnadho himamasu puman,
Ithyabhathi characharathmakamidham,
Yasyaiva murthyashtakam,
Nanyath kinchana vidhyathe vimrusathaam,
Yasmath parasmath vibho,
Thasmai sri guru murthaye nama idham,
Sree dakshinamurthaye. || 9 ||
To the sake of which supreme Brahman,
The universe is shining as self,
Which is Movable and immovable, with its aspects?
Of water, fire, air, space,
The sun, moon and the individual soul,
And also to those who examine the truth behind,
The meaning of this universe and find,
That it Consists of nothing but,
The God who is everywhere.
Salutation to the God facing the south,
Who is the greatest teacher.
Sarvathmathvamithi sphutikruthamitham,
Yasmadamushamin sthave,
Thenasya sravanath thadartha mananath,
Dyanascha Sankeerthanath,
Sarvathmathva maha vibhuthi sahitham,
Syadheeswarasthvam svatha,
Siddhyeth thath punarashtadha parinatham,
Chaisvaryamvayhatham. || 10 ||
The concept of the Atma,
Which is explained in this poem of praise,
Hearing which, understanding which,
Meditating which and singing which,
One would attain the state of the godliness,
And the great state of self-realization,
And also you would get the eight powers of occult,
Without any problems in between.
Appendix
The following three stanzas as well as the first stanza are chanted after the main stotram:
Chitram Vata tharor mole vruddha,
Sishya, Guror Yuva,
Gurostu mounam vykhyanam,
Sishyasthu china samsaya
It is strange to see,
The very old disciples,
And the very young teacher,
Who sit under a banyan tree,
With the teacher always observing silence,
And the students getting all the doubts cleared.
Om nama pranavarthaya,
Suddha jnanaika moorthaye nama,
Nirmalaya prasanthaya,
Sri Dakshinamurthaye nama.
Salutations to that Dakshinamurthy,
Who is the meaning of the pranava, “om”,
Who is the personification of unalloyed wisdom,
Who is crystal clear in his thought,
And who is the epitome of peace.
Gurave sara lokaanam,
Bishaje bhava roginaam,
Nidhaye sarva vidhyanam,
Sri Dakshinamurthaye nama.
Salutations to that Dakshinamurthy,
Who is the teacher of the entire world,
Who is the doctor to those,
Afflicted by the disease of birth and death,
And who is the treasure hose of all knowledge.

By Adi Shankara
Translated by P.R. Ramachander
I salute that remover of obstacles,
Who has modakas in his hand.
Who always bestows salvation.
Who wears a part of moon on his head.
Who protects this world which is varied.
Who is the leader of those who cannot be lead,
Who is the cause of destruction of asuras,
And who destroys all things which are not good.
I bow before that great Lord permanently,
Who creates fear in the enemies of his devotees.
Who sparkles like the just risen Sun,
Who is saluted by Gods and Asuras.
Who destroys obstacles of his devotees,
Who is the God of all devas,
Who is the God of all wealth,
Who is the God of all elephants,
And who is the leader of the army of Lord Shiva.
I bow to that Ganapati who shines like the Sun,
Who bestows peace to all the worlds,
Who removed the Gajamukhasura from this world,
Who has a very big paunch,
Who has an elephant-face which blesses,
And who is the one who shows kindness.
Who is tolerant,
Who is full of blessing,
And who showers great fame,
To those who salute Him.
I salute the very ancient elephant-god
Who destroys the wants of the have nots,
Who has been worshipped since ancient times,
Who is the eldest son of the lord who destroyed cities,
Who eats away the pride of the enemies of the gods,
Who is awesome at the time of final deluge,
Who wears serpents like Dananjaya as ornaments,
And who is fierce like the elephant in rut.
I always meditate only on that God with single tusk,
Who is ever lustrous tusk is very pretty,
Who is the son of Lord who killed the god of death,
Who has a form beyond ones imagination,
Who is endless,
Who tears asunder all obstacles,
And who dwells forever in the heart of Yogis,
Like the season of spring.
He, who remembers with respect every morning,
These five gems of the great Lord Ganapati,
And who meditates in his heart the leader of ganas,
Will soon be blessed with a healthy life,
Free of all problems, endowed with great peace
Great sons, longevity and spiritual and physical wealth

tava taṭanikaṭe yasya nivāsaḥ khalu vaikuṇṭhe tasya nivāsaḥ || 10 ||
O Ganga! Those who seek happiness worship you. You are the source of happiness for Alkapuri and source of eternal bliss.
Those who reside on your banks are as privileged as those living in Vaikunta (the eternal abode of Vishnu). 10

O Devi! It is better to live in your waters as turtle or fish,
or live on your banks as poor “candal” rather than to live away from you as a wealthy king. 11

O Goddess of Universe! You purify us. O daughter of Jahnu Muni (the sage who drank the whole Ganga and then released Her through his ear at the request of Bhagiratha)!
One who recites this Ganga Stotram every day, definitely achieves success. 12

Those who have devotion for Mother Ganga, always get happiness and they attain liberation.
This beautiful and lyrical Gangastuti is a source of Supreme bliss. 13

This Ganga Stotram, written by Shri Adi Shankaracharya, devotee of Lord Shiva,
purifies us and fulfills all our desires. 14

Praise of the Goddess Night revealed in the Veda. From the Devi Mahatmya (Markendeya Purana).
Vedoktam Ratri Suktam is recited before starting Durga Saptashati Patha.

Om. The night of duality comes forth in many forms and times
perceivable by the divine power of sense.

Omnipresent, immortal, the Goddess of places high and low; darkness is repelled
by the Light.

She gave definition to Her sister, the Dawning Light, the Goddess who comes.
And the darkness departs.

She is ours now. May we see Her effortless, unimpaired
movements upon the earth as a bird sees from its dwelling in a tree (remaining
only the witness).

For all of humanity, for animals who traverse by foot, or birds who fly in the
air, She is the object of desperate search.

Drive away the wolves of confusion, dispel the wolves of egotism, the thieves:
hunger, thirst, greed, illusion, grief, and death. Then be to us the excellent
crossing to Wisdom.

The all-pervasive darkness is near me, existing as individual forms in the
blackness. O Dawning Light, dismiss this ignorance.

O Daughter of the Heavens, I have recited this to gratify you. O night of

Praise of the Goddess Night revealed in the Tantra. From the Devi Mahatmya (Markendeya Purana).
Tantroktam Ratri Suktam is recited before starting Durga Saptashati Patha. Brahma is asking Goddess to wake up Vishnu and ask him to kill the dangerous demons Madhu and Kaitabha.
om viśveśvarīṃ jagadhātrīṃ sthitisamhārakārinīṃ |
nidrāṃ bhagavatīṃ viṣṇoratulāṃ tejasaḥ prabhuḥ ||1||
Brahma started praising Goddess Nidradevi (Goddess of Sleep):
You are having the power of creation, protection and destruction which is an auspicious power of Vishnu.

O Goddess! You are Swaha (oblation), Swadha (protection) and Vashatkara (the personification of Vedic sacrifice).
The seven swaras (7 musical tunes/notes) are also created by You or are of your-form.
You are bestowing life to the people. You are present in the Omkar in the form of three matras (letters A, U and M).
ardhamātrāsthitā nityā yānuccāryā viśeṣataḥ |

sustain this world.
At the end of the universe, You absorb everything in yourself.
visṛṣṭau sṛṣṭi rūpā tvam sthiti rūpā ca pālane|
tathā saṃhṛti rūpānte jagato’sya jaganmaye ||5||
O Goddess! At the time of generation of this World you are Srushti (the
creation),
while the world continues to exist you are Sthiti (the stability), and at the time of Dissolution you are Samhriti (the destroyer).

people.
You are dangerous Kala Ratri, Maha Ratri and Moha Ratri.

O Goddess! You are in every form, sat (good) or asat (bad). Hence it is
impossible to praise you.
yayā tvayā jagatstraṣṭā jagatpātyatti yo jagat |
so ̕pi nidrāvaśaṃ nītaḥ kastvāṃ stotumiheśvaraḥ ||12||
O Goddess! You have made Creator, Protector and Destroyer of the people and
world (Vishnu) to sleep.
Hence nobody other than Vishnu is able to praise you.

kāritāste yato ̕tastvāṃ kaḥ stotuṃ śaktimān bhavet ||13||
O Goddess! You have given a body to me (Brahma), Vishnu and Shiva, so who has
the ability to praise you?
