Om.

May everything we hear with our ears, what we see with our eyes and what we say be auspicious.

May we enjoy good health and have a good life.

May Indra with the wisdom of him, Pushan (Vedic solar deity and one of the Adityas) with the knowledge of him, Tarksya (mythical bird, Garuda) protecting us from misfortunes and Brihaspati (the Guru of the Devas), grant us well-being.

May we achieve peace on all levels: physical, divine and spiritual (on the Adibhautika, Adidaivika and Adyatmika levels).

Hari Om! Salutations to You, O Ganapati.

You are the Tattva, the Eternal Principle.

You are truly the Creator. You are truly the Supporter. You are truly the Destroyer.

You are the whole universe. You are the Brahman, the Supreme Self, and the Atman the eternal inner essence.

ṛtaṃ vacmi | satyaṃ vacmi | || 2||

I declare the Truth, I declare the Reality.

Oh Ganapati, protect me. Protect the speakers. Protect the listener. Protect the giver of Truth. Protect the holder of Truth. Protect the disciple that repeats this Truth. Protect that in the East. Protect that in the South. Protect that in the West. Protect that in the North. Protect that above. Protect that below. Protect me everywhere!

tvaṃ vāṅmayastvaṃ cinmayaḥ |

tvaṃ saccidānandādvitīyo'si |

tvaṃ pratyakṣaṃ brahmāsi |

tvaṃ jñānamayo vijñānamayo'si || 4||

Oh Ganapati, You are Speech. You are Consciousness. You are Bliss. You are Brahma. You are Sat (Being), Chit (Consciousness) and Ananda (Bliss). You are the manifest Brahman. You are knowledge. You are intelligence.

sarvaṃ jagadidaṃ tvatto jāyate |

The whole universe was created by you.

The whole universe is supported by you.

The whole universe will dissolve in you.

The whole universe will thus come back to you.

You manifested as earth, water, fire, air and ether.

You are the four different states of Speech (Para, Pashyanti, Madhyama and Vaikhari).

tvaṃ guṇatrayātītaḥ | tvaṃ avasthātrayātītaḥ | tvaṃ dehatrayātītaḥ | tvaṃ kālatrayātītaḥ | tvaṃ mūlādhārasthito'si nityam | tvaṃ śaktitrayātmakaḥ | tvāṃ yogino dhyāyanti nityam |

You are beyond the Three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas). You are beyond the three states of consciousness (wakefulness, dream, deep sleep). You are beyond the three bodies (casual, subtle and gross). You are beyond the three times (past, present and future).

You always dwell in the Muladhara Chakra. You are the origin of the three Shaktis: Will (Ichha), Knowledge (Jñana) and Action (Kriya). Yogis always meditate on you.

You are Brahma, you are Vishnu, you are Rudra, you are Agni, you are Vayu, you are the Moon, you are the Sun, you are the Brahman and the three worlds (Bhuh, Bhuvah and Suvah).

gaṇādiṃ pūrvamuccārya varṇādiṃstadanantaram | anusvāraḥ parataraḥ |

gaṇaka ṛṣiḥ | nicṛdgāyatrī chandaḥ | śrīmahāgaṇapatirdevatā |

Om̐ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ || 7||

(Here the form of Ganapati's mantra "Om gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ" is described.)

The first syllable of the word Gana (ie "G") must be pronounced first; hence the first varna (ie "A") should immediately follow. The Anusvara should then follow, then it should be shone with the half moon (ie the nasal sound of Chandrabindu, thus creating "Gaṃ") and preceded by Tara (Om).

O Ganapati! This is your Mantra Svarupa (Om Gaṃ).

In your Mantra Svarupa, G-kara is the first form, A-kara is the middle form and Anuswara is the last form. Bindu is the top form joined with Nada. All together they form Ganapati Vidya.

The Rishi is Ganaka. The metric is Nicrdgayatri. The Devata is Ganapati.

Om gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ. My salutations to Ganapati.

ekadantāya vidmahe vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi |

tanno dantiḥ pracodayāt || 8||

(Ganapati Gayatri is given here)

I meditate on the Lord Ganapati with a curved tusk. May he awaken our conscience.

radaṃ ca varadaṃ hastairbibhrāṇaṃ mūṣakadhvajam |

My salutations to the divine form of Ganapati, which has only one tusk, four hands carrying noose, goad, one tusk and showing the gesture of gift (Varada Mudra). His flag has a mouse emblem.

Red-skinned, with a large belly and large ears. Dressed in red, scented with a red perfume, adored with red flowers.

For devotees he is the merciful, eternal God, cause of the universe. He manifested at the beginning of Creation, within Nature (Prakriti), from the Supreme Purusha.

He who always meditates on him in this way is the best among yogis.

namo vrātapataye namo gaṇapataye namaḥ pramathapataye namaste'stu lambodarāya ekadantāya vighnavināśine śivasutāya śrīvaradamūrtaye namaḥ || 10||

My salutations to the Lord of all human beings.

Salutations to the Lord of all Ganas and all Pramathas (Shiva's militias).

Salutations to You, with a big belly (Lambodara) and with a single tusk (Ekadanta).

Salutations to the One who removes all obstacles, who is the son of Shiva and who is the boon-giver.

He who studies this Atharvashirsha will realize Brahman. He will not be bound by any obstacles, he will be freed from the five sins and will always be happy.

Studying this in the evening will destroy the sins committed during the day. Studying this in the morning will destroy sins committed during the night. Studying it both in the evening and in the morning will free you from evil and you will attain Dharma (Virtuosity), Artha (Health), Kama (Desire), and Moksha (Liberation).

This Atharvasirsha is not to be given to undeserving people, whoever does it will commit sin.

Repeating it a thousand times will lead to spiritual realizations.

He who worships Ganapati with this Atharvashirsha becomes eloquent.

Who fasts and recites it on the 4th day (Chaturthi) acquires knowledge.

Those who worship Ganapati will attain the supreme knowledge of Brahman and will be free from fear.

Whoever worships Ganapati with Durva Grass will achieve prosperity.

Whoever worships him with fried rice will become famous and smart.

Whoever worships him with a thousand Modakas (one of Ganesh's favorite sweets) will get the desired fruits.

Whoever worships him with Samidh and Ghee (twigs dipped in Ghee) will get it all.

He who recites this Atharvashirsha to eight Brahmana becomes like the rays of the sun.

He who recites it during a solar eclipse, in a great river or in front of an image of Ganapati becomes free from obstacles, vices and sins and becomes omniscient.

Thus ends the Upanishad.
