Devi Suktam

The Devi Suktam is a hymn of the Rigveda (RV 10.125). It consists of 8 verses and is dedicated to Vak. It is recited at the end of Devi Mahatmya.

om ahaṃ rudrebhirvasubhiścarāmyahamādityairuta viśvadevaiḥ

ahaṃ mitrāvaruṇobhā bibharmyahamindrāgnī ahamaśvinobhā 1

The Rudras, the Vasus, the Adityas, the Vishvadevas, are but my diverse manifestations. In me are present Mitra, Varuna, Indra, Agni and the Pair of Ashvins (twin solar deities).

ahaṃ somamāhanasaṃ bibharmyahaṃ tvaṣṭāramuta pūṣaṇaṃ bhagam

ahaṃ dadhāmi draviṇaṃ haviṣmate saprāvye ye yajamānāya sunvate 2

In me are present Soma (the presiding deity of Soma-rasa, the juice of the gods), Tvashta (the heavenly builder), Pusha (protector of the living world) and Bhaga (God of wealth and marriage). I offer merits of Yajña to my devotees who prepare the Soma-rasa and please Gods through oblations in the sacrificial fire.

ahaṃ rāṣṭrī saṅgamanī vasūnāṃ cikituṣī prathamā yajñiyānām

tāṃ mā devā vyadadhuḥ purutrā bhūri̍sthātrāṃ bhūryyaveśayantīm  3

I am the Queen of the whole universe. I am supreme erudition. I am the first venerable deity in all sacrificial rites. I offer prosperity. I am present in all beings in various forms. All gods and devotees venerate me everywhere.

mayā so annamatti yo vipaśyati yaḥ prāṇiti ya īṃ śṛṇotyuktam

amantavomānta upakṣiyanti śrudhi śrutaṃ śraddhivaṃ te vadāmi 4

Only through me every man eats the food that feeds him, sees, breathes, hears what is told. Anyone who fails to realize the true nature which is in all things dissipates his life. Oh glorious friend, listen to the Supreme Truth!

ahameva svayamidaṃ vadāmi juṣṭaṃ devebhiruta mānuṣebhiḥ

yaṃ kāmaye taṃ tamugraṃ kṛṇomi taṃ brahmāṇaṃ tamṛṣiṃ taṃ sumedhām 5

I have expounded this knowledge of the Supreme Brahman which is venerated both by men and gods. I make the man I love great and mighty, I make him a Brahman, a Rishi, and a sage.

ahaṃ rudrāya dhanurātanomi brahmadviṣe śarave hanta vā u

ahaṃ janāya samadaṃ kṛṇomyahaṃ dyāvāpṛthivī āviveśa 6

I gave the bow to Rudra to kill the demon that has defied the brahmana. I unleashed a battle to protect humanity and I have access both to this world and the world beyond.

ahaṃ suve pitaramasya mūrdhan mama yonirapsvantaḥ samudre

tato viti̍ṣṭhe bhuvanānu viśvotāmūṃ dyāṃ varṣmaṇopa spṛśāmi 7

I am the spirit which the universe is established on. My home is in the waters, in the ocean. I am present in all beings and in all forms and touch the summit of heaven with my greatness.

ahameva vāta iva pravāmyā-rabhamāṇā bhuvanāni viśvā

paro divāpara enā pṛthivyai-tāvatī mahinā sambabhūva 8

I blow intensively all the universe like the wind. Beyond this earth and beyond the heavens I have extended my greatness.

om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ

iti ṛgvedoktaṃ devīsūktaṃ samāptam

Om peace, peace, peace.

Here ends the Devi Suktam from Rigveda.
