Kāla Bhairava Jayanti
Kāla Bhairava Jayanti or Maha Kāla Bhairava Ashtami is the birthday of Bhairava, terrifying form of Shiva, a very auspicious Hindu holiday and much observed by devotees.
It falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the waning moon (Krishna Paksha) in the lunar month of Margashirsha (as per Purnimant calendar) and Kartik (as per Amavasyant calendar).
Kāla Bhairava is the protector of the Universe (Kshetrapālaka), he is the Lord of Time and the manifestation of the wrath of Shiva. According to the myth, when Brahma arrogantly insulted Shiva, Kāla Bhairava sprang from the forehead of the enraged Shiva and cut off one of Brahma's five heads. Due to this sin, Brahma's head got stuck on Bhairava's left palm. To redeem himself from sin, Bhairava had to wander the world as a naked beggar. Bhairava's sin ends when he reaches the holy city of Kashi (Varanasi), where an ancient temple dedicated to him still exists.
Famous temples of Kāla Bhairava:
Kāl Bhairav Mandir is one of the oldest and most popular Shiva temples in Varanasi, the Murti (idol) is housed in the inner sanctuary of the temple, has a silver face and is seated on his Vahana (vehicle, a dog) with a trident. Only the face of the icon decorated with flower garlands is visible to visitors. The rest of the Murti is covered with a piece of cloth.
Only during Kāla Bhairava Jayanti the cloth is removed to reveal the whole image.
Kāla Bhairava Mandir, Bhairavgarh Ujjain - Madhya Pradesh. Located on the banks of the Shipra River, it is one of the busiest temples in the city, devotees offer alcohol to the patron deity of the city.
Prāchīn Kāla Bhairava Mandir, near Dohla railway crossing, in Dhuri - Punjab, is one of the oldest Bhairava temples in Punjab.
Mahā Kāla Bairavar Mandir, Dhombarambedu village near Uthukottai - Tamilnadu and many others scattered throughout India.
